Student Researcher at ICCP has been selected as the Top Excellence Award for Outstanding Paper

Gyu-Seok Yi, a Ph.D. student in Climate Systems department and a student researcher at the IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP) supervised by Professor June-Yi Lee, has been selected as the Top Excellence Award for Outstanding Paper (Grand Prize awarded by the Chair of the Korea Association of Ocean Science and Technology Societies) at the 2026 KAOSTS Joint Conference Paper Competition.

The award ceremony took place on May 28 during the 2026 KAOSTS Joint Conference held at the International Convention Center Jeju.

Gyu-Seok was selected for the top honor in the marine science category for his paper titled “Future mesoscale horizontal stirring in polar oceans intensified by sea ice decline.” Utilizing ultra-high-resolution climate model simulations, the study successfully demonstrated that the decline in sea ice driven by global warming intensifies mesoscale horizontal stirring in polar oceans.

In recognition of its academic excellence, the research was published in the November 2025 issue of the prestigious international journal Nature Climate Change.
