For decades, monsoons were mainly studied as isolated regional phenomena. Today, we recognize that these systems are part of an overarching, interconnected planetary-scale overturning circulation of the tropical atmosphere that impacts the lives of over two-thirds of the global population. Recent advances in observations and climate models indicate that the global monsoon domain has been expanding, with extreme rainfall and high-impact events becoming more frequent, in part due to greenhouse warming. Contextualizing and understanding these shifts, both regionally and globally, is necessary to improve hydroclimate projections relevant to agriculture, water security, human mobility, and ecosystems. In this conference, we will bring together experts from various disciplines, including atmospheric science, climate modeling, hydrology, and paleoclimate, to advance our understanding of monsoon systems, including the variability and predictability of global and regional monsoons, their sensitivity to past and future forcings, and to forge new collaborations.
