Perspective on Tropical Cyclones Trends and Projections

Seminar by Prof. Suzana J. Camargo from Columbia Climate School, Columbia University

16 June 2026
KST 14:00

The Seminar is being held in Room 1010 (Jasmin) – Integrated mechanical engineering building. Click here for the campus map.

In the first part of the talk, I’ll give an overview of the current knowledge of tropical cyclones (TCs) trends.  I’ll discuss recent trends of  TC frequency in the last decades and present recent results on their historical trends using multiple reanalyses datasets.  I’ll then discuss multiple aspects of TC future projections, using multiple methodologies, namely environmental proxies, TC resolving global climate models, as well statistical-dynamical downscaling models, pointing out the advantages and issues in each of them.  I’ll conclude with a discussion the main causes of uncertainties in TC future projections.
