Extreme climate events pose an increasing threat to natural and human ecosystems, especially when they co-occur, amplifying the effect of stand-alone events. In this seminar, insights regarding the compound occurrence of hot and dry events in the Northern Hemisphere will be presented. In particular, the mechanisms controlling the most impactful events in three breadbasket regions across North America, Europe and Asia will be illustrated. Results show that compound hot and dry events are triggered by blocking-like anomalies and maintained by a sensible-latent heat feedback at the surface. Moisture availability in different regions modulates the intensity of the events.
