The talk “Primary Dispersal of Humans, Climate Change, and Megamammal Extinctions in the Americas at the End of the Pleistocene” will address what could be considered the first event of the Anthropocene: the widespread extinction of continental animals with a body mass exceeding 44 kg (megafauna) across the globe between 50,000 and 10,000 years ago. With a particular focus on the Americas, it will summarize the evidence supporting human agency as the primary driver of megafaunal collapse, and compare it with the evidence backing climate change as the principal responsible agent. The most common criticisms of human-driven explanations will also be discussed.
