This talk presents a new statistical framework for evaluating climate models that captures three key features of climate time series: multivariate dependence, temporal correlation, and the response to external forcings. Within this framework, we derive a rigorous hypothesis test for assessing if two data sets – such as observations and a model simulation – can be regarded as realizations of the same underlying climate process. The resulting test unifies several classical comparison methods as special cases. Applied to modern climate models, the framework reveals that each climate model exhibits a distinct statistical fingerprint in its variability and climatology that clearly distinguishes it from observations.
