As part of his official and first visit to Busan on November 10th, 2020, the German Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Dr. Michael Reiffenstuel visited the IBS Center for Climate Physics. Accompanied by Honorary Consul Prof. Dury Chung, he met several scientists and toured ICCP’s paleo-climate lab. Axel Timmermann explained the specific situation of governmental research support in South Korea and how the country is emerging as a new powerhouse in basic science. In subsequent conversations, Dr. Reiffenstuel and ICCP members discussed the differences between the longstanding tradition for basic science support in Germany through the Max Planck Society and the recent history of IBS research centers in Korea.
