Postdoctoral Fellow Position – Paleoclimate/ecosystem modeling
Project: Modeling climate effects on Human evolution and megafauna extinction
Employer: IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP); http://ibsclimate.org
Location: Pusan National University, Busan, South Korea
Education Level: PhD
Job type: Postdoctoral Fellow
Salary: 52 million KRW/year (~47,000 USD)
Term: Full Time, 2 year, with possibility for renewal
Start date: March 2021, or later
Requirements: PhD in physics, climate sciences, meteorology, oceanography, applied mathematics, theoretical biology or a related field.
Applicants are expected to have excellent computational skills, excitement to work on a new research subject, a strong publication record, curiosity and creativity, and an interest in working in an international and interdisciplinary research environment.
The project focuses on quantifying the effects of past climate change, including abrupt glacial climate transitions, on the evolution and migration of Homo sapiens, Neanderthals, Denisovans and the extinction of Pleistocene megafauna. The successful applicant will use and further develop a computer model which simulates key aspects of dispersal, adaptation, interbreeding, competition and culture. The model will be forced with climate data obtained from a 2-million-year-long transient climate model simulation conducted recently at the ICCP with the Community Earth System model.
More information on the scope of the research can be found on: https://ibsclimate.org/research/current-research/anthroposphere/
The IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP), (http://iccp.ibs.re.kr) directed by Dr. Axel Timmermann, is dedicated to advancing the understanding of natural climate variability, man-made climate change and their impacts on the hydrological cycle, regional processes, ice-sheets, and sea level. The ICCP is generously funded through the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) (http://ibs.re.kr).
Please submit a cover letter, a short statement of your research interests, curriculum vitae, the name of 2 references, and up to three publications to Ms. Jenny Choi (hahadaye@pusan.ac.kr). If you have any further questions regarding this position, please contact Axel Timmermann at axel@ibsclimate.org.
